Lamb Loin Chops at Ribs 'n' Kabobs in Artesia are grilled and served with your choice of Moroccan, spicy or jerk sauce. Like everything else on the menu they are hand-slaughtered Zabiha halal, which is harder to find on a lamb chop plate than it should be in Southern California.
This post is a practical guide to ordering them: what the cut is, how to pick a sauce, which sides to add, what other lamb and goat dishes are on the menu, and how the lamb is sourced. There is no recipe here. There is enough to help you order well.
What is a lamb loin chop?
The loin is the strip along the lamb's back, between the ribs and the leg. A loin chop is a cross-section of it, bone in, with a small nugget of tenderloin on one side of the bone and the larger loin muscle on the other. Think of a tiny T-bone steak and you have the picture.
It is one of the most tender cuts on the animal, which is why it suits the grill. Rib chops, the ones with the long bone, look prettier on a plate. Loin chops carry more meat. Our Lamb Loin Chops are listed under lamb and goat on the menu.
How do you choose between Moroccan, spicy and jerk sauce?
There are three choices, and you pick one when you order:
- Moroccan. The sauce shown in the photo at the top of this page.
- Spicy. For anyone who orders the Spicy ribs and likes it that way.
- Jerk. The third option, for a change from the other two.
If you are not sure, ask at the counter, tell us how much heat you like, and we will point you to one. If your table cannot agree, order two plates in two sauces and trade halfway. That is also the easiest way to find your favorite for next time.
What sides go with lamb chops?
Our sides list covers both halves of the menu, so you can take the chops in whichever direction you like.
| If you want | Add these sides |
|---|---|
| A South Asian plate | Basmati rice, naan or paratha |
| A Mediterranean plate | Hummus, pita and green salad |
| A steakhouse plate | Mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and garlic bread |
| A BBQ plate | Grilled corn and BBQ beans |
Basmati rice and naan are the most common pick, and they work with all three sauces.
For drinks, a mango lassi is the natural match for the spicy and jerk versions, and chai or kadhaa is a good way to finish. If there is room, gulab jamun, kulfi or falooda close the meal.
Lamb or goat: what else is on the menu?
Lamb chops are the showpiece, but they are not the only lamb or goat in the kitchen.
- Grandma Recipe Lamb Seekh Kabob. Minced lamb, or goat if you prefer, hand-mixed with the family's spices and cooked on the lava rock grill. How we make our kabobs tells the story.
- Goat Curry. Goat in a spiced curry, served with rice and naan. The one to order when you want something to spoon over rice.
- Weekend specials. Goat biryani and haleem appear among the weekend specials, so ask what is on when you visit.
If you are choosing between lamb and goat, the seekh kabob is the easiest way to compare, because you can order it either way.
How is the lamb sourced?
The same way as every other meat at Ribs 'n' Kabobs. All lamb and goat is 100% Zabiha Halal: hand-slaughtered by a Muslim who recites the name of God over the animal, with the blood fully drained. The restaurant has been HFSAA-certified since it opened in Artesia in 2014. HFSAA, the Halal Food Standards Alliance of America, requires hand slaughter, no mechanical slaughter, no cross-contamination and traceability from the slaughterhouse to the kitchen. You can read the full standard at hfsaa.org.
There is no pork and no alcohol anywhere on site, so the lamb chops share a kitchen only with other halal food.
How do lamb chops fit into a bigger meal?
For a table, pair the chops with a Kabob Platter of 1 to 5 skewers so there is seekh kabob and chicken for anyone who does not eat lamb, and add Back Ribs from the hickory smoker if someone wants BBQ. Grilled lamb on one side and smoked beef ribs on the other is our whole menu on one table. The difference between the two styles is laid out in Pakistani BBQ vs American BBQ.
Can you serve lamb chops at a catered event?
Yes, lamb chops can be part of a catering order. They make a good choice for the head table at a wedding or a family dinner, next to kabobs and biryani for the rest of the room. We cater with live BBQ stations and onsite grilling, buffet or plated service, with at least 24 hours notice for any order and 4 to 6 weeks for weddings and large events. Delivery covers Artesia and nearby cities such as Cerritos, Lakewood and Bellflower. The options are on the catering page.
